Last night I found my shadow crying

Joel Cuthbert It's quite a thing to have to compose oneself some lullabies in hopes of bringing on sleep. (Sleep is a strange mistress, you can't force the thing, only set the scene, close one's eyes and lay in hope of her arrival!) There's something enchanting about those strange hours when the rest of the world is dreaming (and you would like to be too). Here our dear Fernando finds solace in slow wandering along the piano's keys. May it be the siren call of sleep for those in need, perhaps even tonight! Favorite track: 4.27 Am, February 14th, 2023.

about

‘Last night I found my shadow crying’ is my second solo piano album, previously to this ‘The shape of the night to come’, was released in September of 2019.

As the track titles suggest, this album was recorded after midnight, during a period of insomnia that I suffered this year. For 2 weeks or so I would wake up and, tired of being asleep, I started recording these pieces until I was weary enough to go back to bed.

These are improvisations in the form of ‘songs', in a broad sense. I would let myself go and surrender to the flow of the notes and chords - something I rarely do when I am playing, even though I am improvising...

Listening at low volume is recommended to re-create the sense of intimacy that I have tried to achieve.

I hope you enjoy this album as much as I did playing these lullabies for an insomniac grown-up.
