about

The 'Montecarlo Swingers Association Ambient Tapes'
Serendipity and the advocate for imperfection.

For months I sort to realise songs to complete this album which was loosely commissioned last year by Christian Delahaye, whom I met in Avignon in France, while I was touring around Europe in 2012. We had many great conversations on the arts and music, but what really struck me was something that Christian confided in me. He was into the swingers culture and he asked me if I've ever thought if there was any relation between free improv music and swinging. I said “No" - I had considered the links between free improv and many aspects of social life, but never with the ‘swinging thing’. As the years passed by and we remain friends, I often think about his question. In 2022, he asked if I would create some music for his group of swinging friends and I replied yes.

As suggested, I struggled for months to find the proper sounds and a concept for this project. I tried many different approaches, however none of them worked out until I came across a cassette tape that I had been recording during the last few months on a multitrack Fostex X-18 portastudio. I had recklessly recorded unrelated sounds onto the different tracks, not at all taking into consideration if they fitted or not. Destined to be erased - I realised however, that it was unexpectedly good and decided to mix it there an then - unaware exactly of what sounds it contained. I improvised a mix and the product of that mixing performance is what you are about to listen to.

This album is imperfect on purpose, lovingly lo-fi, a bit rusty, grainy and rough around the edges but it has a vibe to it and it feels alive; barely any plugins were used. I followed my instinct and committed to my decisions. It could be different in a million ways, but it is what it is, "The Montecarlo Swingers Association Ambient Tapes”.
